Abstract:

"J--" is a integrated development environment, which equips the Java (TM) Development Kit from SUN® Microsystems with a graphical user interface. The development environment consists of the project management, an editor, some GUI builders and the help system. The editor is able to handle multiple documents and provides syntax coloring for Java™ source code, the integrated class browser enables the user to find methods and attributes quickly. The GUI builder allows the easy construction of menus and toolbars. The help system uses the documentation files shipped with SUN®’s JDK. This ensures, that the help system can be used with future versions of the Java (TM) Development Kit.

J-- is available under the GNU General Public Licence (read "licence.txt" of the distribution package). You can download the product using the link below. Source code and a HTML documentation is included. The product is offered as is without any warranty.

Overview:

Project Manager Handles projects, which are logical units of project files and other project related settings (e.g. the compiler settings). A project may be saved to or loaded from a file. Such a file is portable from directory to directory and even from platform to platform.

Codepad Editor is an editor with syntax coloring and a function to create code skeletons from templates. It was designed to edit plain text documents. Functionality:  Auto indent Indent/ Unindent blocks Search and replace Undo/redo Selectable font attributes Auto save

Magic Menu is a special version of the Codepad editor. It was designed to edit java properties files containing menubar and toolbar definitions, which are plain text documents. The editor provides useful dialogs to insert toolbars, menubars, menus and menu items. Menubars and toolbars can be previewed using a swing view or a AWT view.

WebHelp is a simple hypertext viewer for the J-- Online Help and the JDK Core API Reference. It is connected to the Codepad editor, where you can start a keyword search by setting the caret on a word and pressing Ctrl-F1.

Requirements:

To run J-- you need
• JDK (not JRE) 1.1.6 or higher from SUN® Microsystems.
• Swing 1.0.3 or higher from SUN® Microsystems (J-- for JDK 1.1 only).
• Netscape Browser (recommended).

You should use a machine that is as fast or faster than a Pentium 90.

Download:

• J-- version 1.0.4 for JDK 1.2 (install.jar) 
  Install by double-clicking (or execute "java -jar instjmm.jar").
  Fixed the printing problem.
• J-- version 1.0.3 for JDK 1.2 (jmminus12.zip) 
• J-- version 1.0.0 for JDK 1.1 (jmminus.zip; note: this version is no longer supported!)
• Diploma thesis (in german) describing the implementation of J-- (jmminus_ps.zip, not required to use J--)
